Walt Disney Co is reporting a higher quarterly profit, with high numbers at their theme parks and studios.
So it seems like not all areas of the American economy are going downhill.
Net income in the fiscal second quarter ended March 29 was $1.1 billion, or 58 cents per share, compared with $919 million, or
44 cents per share, in the same quarter last year.
Revenue rose to $8.71 billion from $8.07 billion a year earlier.
Analysts, on average, had expected revenue of $8.49 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.
Disney shares closed up 1.3 percent at $33.73 on Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Lion King at the Orpheum

This show is phenominal! If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out. Fortunately for you, the show will be in town until the 25th. For some reason, Ticketmaster sold Brandy two tickets in the front row in section one for the mid-range price YESTERDAY. No complaints about that though!
Mickey’s wand at Epcot going bye-bye
by Brad Johnston on Jul.05, 2007, under disney
Brandy and I agree that we enjoyed the wand that complimented Spaceship Earth at Epcot. It’s likely because we came into the Disney obession only six years ago, after the wand had already been constructed for the millennium celebration. Without the wand, Spaceship Earth looks… well, boring. This gives the uninterested folks that get dragged to Epcot each year just another reason to piss and moan.

Mickey Mouse arm, wand coming down from Epcot sphere at Disney World
Scott PowersSentinel Staff Writer
July 5, 2007
The 257-foot-tall Mickey Mouse arm, glove and wand logo structure at Epcot is coming down.
Epcot Vice President Jim MacPhee announced this morning that the time has come to remove the structure, which has served both as a colorful, lighted Epcot sign since 2000, and as a lightning rod for criticism from Epcot purists who contended the image was out of character for Epcot’s architecture.
The structure leans on Epcot’s previous and future iconic figure, the Spaceship Earth Pavilion, a180-foot geodesic sphere that can be seen for miles.
The arm and glove went up for Walt Disney World’s 2000 millennium celebration.
Now, with Epcot’s 25th anniversary this fall, and the temporary closing of Spaceship Earth ride, MacPhee said, “We think the timing of the removal is right.”
Deconstruction of the 50-ton structure begins Monday, and will be completed shortly before the park’s 25th anniversary, October 1. Also coming down are the 36-foot-high “Epcot” letters and colored stars splashing across the sphere.
Also Monday, the Spaceship Earth ride will close to complete a refurbishing sponsored by Siemans AG. The work should be done by November, MacPhee said.
At 257 feet, the arm-glove-wand addition to the Epcot dome made the structure the tallest point in all of Walt Disney World.
Once it comes down, the tallest points according to Sentinel research will be two structures both estimated at 199 feet tall — the Tower of Terror at MGM Studios and the new Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom.
The tallest point in the Magic Kingdom is Cinderella’s Castle at 180 feet.
In terms of park centerpieces, Epcot’s dome and Magic Kingdom’s castle will both be the tallest, followed by Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life at 145 feet and then the sorcerer’s hat at MGM standing at 100 feet tall.

Now here’s something I can appreciate. I always thought of the Leave A Legacy tiles in front of Epcot as a little freaky. All those miniature faces staring at me as I entered the park. Sounds like they’ll remain where they’re at for now but if they’d move them to somewhere else on property, I’d be quite happy. Apparently when they’re purchased, the person buying them is told they’ll always be on Disney property. I’m hoping that a storage shed on property or dumped into the wasteland of the former River Country area is where they’ll eventually wind up.
The Leave A Legacy program, first launched at Epcot in Fall 1999, has been discontinued as of June 16, 2007. The current display of more than 550,000 tiles at the main entrance of Epcot will remain for the time being. The Leave A Legacy Locator station will be relocated to the Camera Center underneath Spaceship Earth. Third 2006 WDW Trip Booked
by Brad Johnston on Nov.14, 2006, under disney, family, trip
Brandy and I just scored some sweet airfare, via Airtran, to Orlando that we couldn’t pass up. SO we’ll be heading down for a long weekend, just the two of us, between December 8-11. We’re planning on one park day and one Typhoon Lagoon day. Any time in between will be spent in either Celebration or Downtown Disney. There are no available value rooms that weekend so we’ll have to grab a car and go off-site. We’re still planning on a week long trip at the end of February for Kaitlyn’s third birthday.
This will be by far the cheapest WDW trip we’ve done thus far. We have one hopper day and five water park admissions remaining so we won’t need to purchase any additional park tickets. Airfare is $360, hotel via Hotwire will be ~$100 for three nights, ~$100 for an economy car, and either eating fast food or counter service – should bring us in for a total around $650ish. That’s quite cheap for a weekend at WDW in my opinion.
This will be our first holiday @ WDW experience which I’m really looking forward to. In the parks, there’s the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights at MGM, Festival of the Seasons at Downtown Disney, and Epcot’s Holidays Around the World. In the resorts, the full-size gingerbread house at Grand Floridian will be a must see.
